“Acne, commonly known as pimples is a variety of skin eruptions ranging
from whiteheads and blackheads to solid red bumps and pustules. The pimples
result because the sebaceous glands, the oil glands in the skin which are
connected to hair follicles, secrete an oily material which normally softens
and lubricates the skin. But these do not become active till puberty. Under
the influence of hormones released at puberty, these glands burst into
activity, excreting the oil up through the follicle on to the skin surface
and causing the face, especially the nose, to become shiny. This problem is
more or less normal during adolescence. Acne is caused when the outlet of the
gland gets plugged with a lump of oil and dead cells. Bacteria, acts upon it
and further aggravates the process. The free fatty acids and other substances
produced by these bacteria cause irritation to the surrounding skin.”
